After playing two matches in two days ahead of Thanksgiving break, there are only two volleyball teams still undefeated in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference.

Marvin Ridge and Sun Valley are both 4-0 overall this season after picking up two victories earlier this week. Both teams have yet to drop a set so far this year.

The Mavericks stayed perfect on the year by sweeping Cuthbertson and Parkwood on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Marvin Ridge hasn’t dropped a set against a conference opponent since a 3-1 win over Charlotte Catholic in the 2017 SCC Tournament final.

Head coach Brook Hammers’ team has been led this season by a strong senior class. Senior Mac Russ is tops on the team with 48 kills — double the player in second place — while also leading the Mavericks in service aces (11). Senior setter Katie Jamerson currently leads all county players with 89 assists this season.

The Spartans kept their record unblemished thanks to wins over Weddington and Monroe this week. The matchup with the Warriors (3-1) was this week’s match of the week in the conference, and Sun Valley cruised to a 3-0 win thanks to a balanced offensive performance that saw four players with at least six kills.

Sophomore Hailey Pearce has led the way for Sun Valley this season, totaling a team-high 44 kills to go with seven blocks and 14 digs. Spartans senior Taylor Parker is currently tops in the county this season with 36 service aces in 72 attempts.

After playing matches on Tuesday, the Spartans and Mavericks will meet for the first time this season on Thursday night at Marvin Ridge.

Also unbeaten on the season is Porter Ridge, which currently leads the Southwestern 4A Conference with a record of 4-0. The Pirates have swept all four of their opponents this season and are in a position to make a run at a league championship this season.

Porter Ridge swept Independence and Garinger last week and is now tied for first place in the conference standings with Myers Park. The Pirates and Mustangs will meet for the first time this season next Thursday in Indian Trail.

Head coach Heather Wells’ team has gotten solid production from a number of players this season. Sophomore Megan Brandon leads the team with 31 kills, while senior Savannah McIntosh paces the Pirates in service aces (24) and assists (67).

Also undefeated within the County is 1A Union Academy, which is 3-0 on the year after sweeping Carolina International School on Monday. The Cardinals have bounced back nicely under new head coach Brooke Hill after dropping seven of their last nine matches to end last season.

Union Academy has been led this season by three-sport star Savanna Brooks, who also plays for the Cardinals’ girls basketball team and is committed to Wingate University on a softball scholarship. Brooks leads the team in aces (15), blocks (10) and digs (12) while ranking second on the team in kills (18).

At the 2A level, Forest Hills is 1-1 in the Rocky River Conference standings, while Central Academy is 0-3.
