MARVIN — The defending Southern Carolina Conference champion Marvin Ridge volleyball team opened up the 2020 season on the road Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep of Monroe. The Mavericks’ powerhouse program has now won 119 of their past 120 league matches overall.
Marvin Ridge was led by the senior duo of Mac Russ and Katie Jamerson, who were both integral parts of last season’s 30-4 overall team. Russ led the team with six kills and four digs while adding four service aces. Jamerson — who led all county players with 1,074 assists in 2019 — totaled 14 assists in the win over the Redhawks (0-1).
The Mavericks will return to action Thursday night at home against Piedmont, which fell to Charlotte Catholic, 3-0, on Tuesday. The Panthers finished in sixth place in the SCC last season (9-15 overall, 4-10 in SCC).
Sun Valley 3, Cuthbertson 0
After losing its first match of the season against 4A opponent Mallard Creek, the Sun Valley volleyball team earned its first win of the season Tuesday on the road against Cuthbertson.
The Spartans (1-1) are coming off a fantastic 2019 campaign that saw them finish second in the SCC standings and an overall record of 24-5. Head coach Rachel Henry’s team returns several key players from last season, including sophomores Hailey Pearce and Aaliyah Mitchell.
The Spartans will look to improve to 2-1 on Thursday night against Parkwood. Cuthbertson (0-1), which is coming off a 12-13 overall campaign in 2019, will try to turn things around against 1-0 Charlotte Catholic on Thursday.
Porter Ridge 3, East Meck 0
The Porter Ridge volleyball team kicked off its 2020 season with a sweep of Southwestern 4A Conference opponent East Meck on Tuesday night. The Pirates were dominant in their return to the court, defeating the Eagles by set scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-16.
Leading the way for the Pirates (1-0) was junior Genesis Ortiz, who had a solid all-around game with eight kills, six service aces and eight digs. Senior Savannah McIntosh also contributed 18 assists from the setter position.
Last season, Porter Ridge went 18-7 overall and finished third in the SWC with a conference record of 11-3. Head coach Heather Welch’s team is back in action Thursday night against Butler. The Pirates swept the Bulldogs in both of their meetings last season.
Odds and ends
… Both Union County teams in the Rocky River Conference were swept in their first volleyball matches. Forest Hills fell to West Stanly, while CATA lost 3-0 at Mount Pleasant.
,,, Union Academy won its season opener, 3-1, over Bradford Prep on Tuesday. The Cardinals (1-0) are trying to improve on an 11-12 overall season in 2019.
… Weddington, which had an 11-3 record in the SCC last season (18-8 overall), swept Parkwood to open the season Tuesday night.
