UNIONVILLE — Phil Mauro has been hired as the next head football coach at Piedmont High, according to the Twitter account @PHS ATHLETICS5.
Mauro previously coached at Carrollton High in Ohio in 2017-18, where he had a combined record of 8-12. Mauro has a career record of 188-122, according to unioncountyhighschoolfootball.com.
“What an AWESOME official first day as a Panther!,” Mauro posted on his Twitter account @PantherPride_FB) on Thursday. “… Southern Hospitality is most DEFINITELY Alive within the Panther Football Family. YOU ROCKKKK!”
Piedmont had a 1-9 record last season under Johnathan Castator, who resigned after one year in charge.
The Panthers haven’t had a winning season since 2013, when they finished 8-5 overall; it was also the last year they won a playoff game. The last time Piedmont had a winning season was under former head coach Ron Massey, who died suddenly in October of 2014 — the day after his team lost a home game against Sun Valley. Piedmont will begin voluntary workouts to prepare for the 2020 season on July 6.
