Geneva Justus Haney met her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ face to face on December 26,2020. She was also greeted by her husband of sixty years, Joseph Warren Haney, parents Turley and Zenia Orr Justus, her two brothers, Wilson and Grady (wife Agnes), and her son-in-law, Reverend Stephen L. Welborn who preceded her in death.
Geneva was born in Henderson County, NC, on October 12, 1920. She grew up in the Blantyre community near Brevard and graduated from Etowah School in 1936. After helping care for her grandmother, she moved to Belmont in 1939. She lived in a boarding house on East Central Avenue and was working in a hosiery mill when she met Warren on a blind date. They married in York, SC on June 20, 1941, lived in Marshville, NC, and were blessed with four children.
Prior to becoming the co-owner of Haney’s Grocery on South Elm Street in 1971, Geneva worked for Mr. Chester Braswell. She was the main cashier and clerk beginning in 1958, when the store was known as Braswell’s Market. Geneva was a faithful member of her church community using her gifts by preparing meals and visiting the shut-ins. She was an active member at Faulks Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday School Class until 2004 when she left her home of forty-seven years and moved to Clayton to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Geneva loved hearing and reading the Word of God and lived it each day. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, jigsaw puzzles, and word search finds. Having her loved ones together around the family table was very important to her and brought her great joy! Her strong fortitude carried her through the last three years in a nursing care facility in Clayton. In Geneva’s one hundred years, she experienced two historical pandemics: The Spanish Flu and COVID-19. She leaves a legacy of faith, endurance, and contentment to those who know and love her.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 2, 2020 at Faulks Baptist Church in Marshville.
Geneva is survived by her four children: Reverend Jerry Haney (Kay), Harry Haney (Carolyn), Kathy H. Welborn, and Sandra H. Sauls (Darrell), nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
Morgan & Son Funeral Home is serving the Haney family.
