A vehicle pursuit on Wednesday (Apr. 14) ended when a vehicle drove into a private pond off of Potter Road, according to reports by the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO).

WESLEY CHAPEL — Ward Baxter Weiland, 48, of Matthews was charged after a vehicle pursuit ended when Weiland crashed into a private pond off of Potter Road, according to a report by the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO).

The pursuit took place on Wednesday afternoon (April 15) at around 4:30 p.m. when Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department requested assistance in connection to a possible stolen vehicle that was traveling toward Union County.

UCSO deputies were able to find Weiland, two passengers in the vehicle in the Indian Trail area, per UCSO.

“The suspect driver, apparently lost, drove down a private drive and circled a pond before losing control and going through the fence and coming to rest in the pond,” one social media post from the sheriff’s office read.”

Weiland has been charged with: three felony counts of habitual larceny; misdemeanor possession of stolen goods; misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia; misdemeanor driving while impaired; misdemeanor resist delay obstruct; felony elude arrest with motor vehicle; misdemeanor speeding; misdemeanor reckless driving to endanger; misdemeanor fail to heed light or siren.

Armond Dewayne Douglas, 62, a passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody on outstanding charges unrelated to the pursuit, according to UCSO. A female passenger was released and does not face charges.
