The house fire on S. Rocky River Road engulfed the garage and kitchen and burned through part of the roof around 3 a.m. on Monday.

Fire stations from the Bakers, Mineral Springs and Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as the Monroe Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 311 S. Rocky River Road at approximately 3:05 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 10), according to a report from the Union County Sheriff’s Office’s communications department.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported finding a fire in the garage and upstairs areas above the garage. Union County Sheriff’s deputies provided traffic control and blocked Rocky River Road between Weddington and Newtown Roads while firefighters worked to suppress the flames.

The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the origin and cause. The fire appears to have been accidental in nature, resulting from an electrical event in the well between the kitchen and the garage, according to the report.

Two people were present at the time the fire started, according to the UCSO report, and were awakened by the sound of a smoke detector; both occupants safely escaped without injury. Union County Fire Marshal Kevin Rigoli pointed out that this is an example of how “smoke detectors save lives.”
