MONROE — Carson Alexander Jones, a 21-year-old Monroe man, was arrested by Union County Sheriff’s detectives on Wednesday (July 29) on charges related to the fatal drug overdose of 21-year-old Cameron Michael Whitson that occurred in May. Jones is charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Sell/Deliver of a Schedule I Controlled Substance and Death by Distribution, according to a report from UCSO.
The Death by Distribution charge was a new law passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2019.
Whitson was found deceased in a bedroom at his grandparent’s house in the 1000 block of Heather Glen Drive in Wesley Chapel on May 22, 2020, according to the report. Whitson had been staying there for approximately two months prior to his death.
The Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was “Fentanyl Toxicity.” An investigation by Sheriff’s detectives included numerous interviews with associates and relatives of Whitson, along with a number of searches and examination of records. Detectives reportedly established a connection between Jones and Whitson and developed probable cause establishing Jones as the source of the fentanyl that caused Whitson’s death.
Jones was taken into custody at the Union County Jail and his next court date is scheduled for August 25.
