MONROE — A man was gunned down in his driveway early Monday morning following a pair of altercations with the eventual shooter.
Dustin Lane Rape, 35, was shot and killed at his 2708 Corinth Church Road residence around 8 a.m., according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Justin Lamar Richardson, 28, reportedly came to the residence where he and Rape argued. Richardson then left, but returned later, said Tony Underwood, chief communications officer for the sheriff’s office.
“Richardson left and returned sometime later and when the altercation resumed,” Underwood said. “There was some ongoing dispute, but we don’t know the motive.”
After the second argument, Richardson went to his car and retrieved a handgun and shot Rape multiple times. He then fled the scene, Underwood said.
Witnesses at the residence alerted authorities about Richardson as the shooter. After deputies issued a bulletin about Richardson and the vehicle he was driving, Monroe police stopped the suspect a shot time later on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.
The handgun was inside the car when Richardson was stopped, Underwood added.
Richardson remains in the Union County jail, charged with Rape’s slaying.
