MONROE — The Enquirer-Journal newspaper received two state awards during the 2020 N.C. Press Association’s Editorial and Advertising Awards ceremony, which was held virtually on Friday (Feb. 26).

Senior Sportswriter Jeremy Vernon was awarded second place in the Community Newspapers Division C for his coverage of Weddington High School’s second straight 3AA state football championship in December of 2019.

The judges commented on Vernon’s “great coverage” of the Warriors, who finished undefeated (16-0) in football for the first time in school history.

“If you measure by state championships, Union County has the best high school sports programs in the state, and Jeremy takes pride in giving them coverage,” said Jerry Snow, Managing Editor of The Enquirer-Journal. “Weddington’s three state championships in a four-year span is one of the best storylines in the Union County sports community, and it is rewarding to see Jeremy recognized for his coverage of coach Andy Capone’s program for the second year in a row.”

The E-J Editorial staff was also awarded third place for Community Coverage.

“Keeping the community informed is a big responsibility and our top priority at The E-J,” Snow said. “We strive for accuracy and fairness on a daily basis. It’s an honor to receive a team award for what we like to call our ‘hyper-local’ coverage.”
