MONROE — Common Heart, a local nonprofit serving Union County residents, is expanding into Monroe. They are adding another traditional food pantry at Benton Heights Presbyterian (2701 Concord Highway). Every Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. a drive-thru pantry will be held at the church.

The first drive-thru pantry at the church was held April 5 when 55 families retrieved boxes of groceries, according to Kara Lopp, community engagement manager for Common Heart.

Common Heart will continue to operate two other pantries on Mondays at Mill Grove United Methodist Church in Hemby Bridge, Lopp said.

Common Heart began in 2006 and has grown to providing food and personal finance workshops to help Union County residents get back on their feet. In 2017, they delivered a week’s worth of groceries to 3,787 families through food pantries and another 1,023 families through mobile pantries, assisting 16,078 people being served, per the organization’s website.
