The Wingate University men’s basketball team is in fourth place out of 13 teams in the South Atlantic Conference heading into the weekend.
The Bulldogs are 12-4 overall and 8-4 in South Atlantic Conference play. Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum are tied for first at 10-2in SAC play, and Queens is in third at 9-2.
Wingate is coming off a 90-56 win over Coker on the road Wednesday night. The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore Donell Nixon, who had a team-high 15 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists.
Wingate junior Jarren Cottingham, a 6-1 guard, is averaging 17.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, sophomore Sean Elmore is averaging 13.1 ppg and junior Andreas Wilson is at 10.8 ppg.
Wingate is back in action Saturday afternoon on the road against Anderson, which is currently 7-8 overall and 4-7 in league play.
Three of Wingate’s next four games come against teams in the bottom half of the SAC standings. The lone is exception is Carson-Newman (10-5, 7-4 SCC), whom the Bulldogs play at home on Jan. 22.
During the shortened 2020-21 season, Wingate went 11-9 overall and 10-8 in conference play. The last time Wingate made the NCAA Division 2 Tournament was in 2016-17, when they went 20-11 overall and 16-6 in conference play.
Wingate’s 2016-17 season ended with back-to-back losses to Queens in the SAC and NCAA Tournaments. Wingate will play its regular season finale at Queens on Feb. 26.
The SAC Tournament will begin the following week on March 2.
