The marquee matchup in Union County in Week 8 sees the Weddington High football team hit the road to take on Porter Ridge on Friday, Oct. 8. The Warriors (5-2 overall, 1-0 in Southern Carolina 4A Conference) are coming off a 49-0 win over Piedmont last week, while the Pirates (3-1, 0-1 SCC) lost a close game at Marvin Ridge, 16-14.

Weddington currently boasts the top passing offense in the county. Senior quarterback Grady Brosterhous, who has completed 100-of-153 passes (65.4%) for 1,304 yards and 12 touchdowns against three interceptions. Senior receiver Landyn Backey leads the county in all three major receiving categories: catches (39), receiving yards (547) and receiving touchdowns (seven).

Porter Ridge is trying to bounce back after totaling less than 300 yards of offense in the loss to the Mavericks last week. Prior to that game, the Pirates were undefeated and averaged 384.3 yards per game.

Weddington has won four straight games over Porter Ridge, including a 33-19 victory in 2019. The last time the Pirates defeated the Warriors was Oct. 14, 2011.

Marvin Ridge at Cuthbertson

Arguably the hottest team in the county, Marvin Ridge, hits the road this Friday for an SCC matchup with Cuthbertson. The Mavericks are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play this fall, while the Cavaliers are 3-3 overall but also 1-0 in SCC play.

Last week, the Mavericks defeated Porter Ridge thanks to three field goals from junior kicker Jackson Moore and a trick play double-pass that resulted in a touchdown. Marvin Ridge is currently searching for its first 10-win season since 2017.

Cuthbertson, meanwhile, dominated Sun Valley, 39-21, last week in its conference opener. The Cavaliers feature one of the most dynamic players in the county in senior A.J. Colombo, who this year alone has thrown for 400 yards and four touchdowns, run for 295 yards and four touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 246 yards and another three scores. He also scored on a kickoff return for a touchdown in the win over the Spartans.

Marvin Ridge senior defensive tackle Devin Reed (6-foot-3, 290 pounds) had two sacks in the win over Porter Ridge. Reed leads the team in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (9) while averaging 6.4 tackles per game.

Marvin Ridge has won six straight games in the series over the Cavaliers, including a 19-13 victory this past spring. The last time Cuthbertson defeated Marvin Ridge was on Oct. 10, 2014.

Piedmont at Sun ValleyA matchup between two longtime rivals sees Piedmont travel to face Sun Valley. Both the Panthers (2-4, 0-1 SCC) and the Spartans (1-5, 0-1 SCC) lost their league openers last week.

Piedmont junior running back Layton Duke leads the county with 600 rushing yards.

Sun Valley, meanwhile, has been carried by the junior running back duo of Toney McFadden and Jaden Goeller. The Spartans have tried two different quarterbacks this season, and junior Eli Fletcher and sophomore Brady Turriff have combined to complete 34-of-72 passes for 468 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Fletcher also plays receiver and defensive back.

The last time these two teams played, Sun Valley earned a 14-7 victory over Piedmont on Nov. 8, 2019.

West Stanly at ParkwoodWith Monroe sidelined again due to COVID restrictions this week, the door has opened in the Rocky River Conference for Parkwood, which is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in RRC play.

The Wolf Pack have put together a balanced offensive attack this fall. Junior quarterback Cam Enos has completed 50-of-78 passes for 744 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions this season, while junior receiver Isaiah Mobley has caught 20 passes for 410 yards and two scores. On the ground, junior Wisdom Holmes has run for 584 yards and a county-high seven touchdowns on 58 carries.

West Stanly is 2-2 overall and is coming off back-to-back losses to Oak Grove and Eastern Randolph. The Colts were outscored by a margin of 60-3 during those two games. West Stanly senior running back Braden Hartsell has run 53 times for 435 yards and four touchdowns this fall.

Parkwood is 3-1 against West Stanly since the start of the 2013 season according to MaxPreps, although the Colts did defeat the Wolf Pack, 35-27, in their last meeting on Oct. 7, 2016.

Anson at Forest HillsForest Hills hosts Anson on Friday. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 0-1 RRC) are looking to get back on track after falling to Parkwood in their RRC opener last week.

Anson is 2-3 overall but has won two straight games entering Friday night’s contest. Through five games, Anson is allowing 27 points per game to its opponents.

Forest Hills has featured a balanced attack offensively. For the season, the Yellow Jackets have racked up 669 passing yards and 672 rushing yards. Juniors Gabe Crowder and Christian Davis have combined for 439 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 70 carries.

Forest Hills is 5-11 against Anson since the start of the 2004 season. In 2019, Anson defeated the Yellow Jackets, 28-7.

Odds and ends ...

... The Monroe football team had another game canceled this week. The Redhawks were supposed to play West Rowan on Friday. As it stands, Monroe has played just three games this season, while several teams around the county will be playing their seventh this week.

... Metrolina (5-1) hits the road Friday to play Hickory Grove Christian (5-0). The Warriors defeated Hickory Grove, 31-17, on Nov. 6, 2020.
