The Piedmont High football team will look for its third straight win Friday night as it hosts Union County foe Parkwood. This is the Wolf Pack’s first game since a 47-30 loss to Cuthbertson in Week 1.

The Panthers (2-2) are coming off a 34-28 win over Fort Mill last week. In that game, Piedmont ran for 379 yards on the ground, led by juniors Layton Duke and Chase Fesmire, who combined for 309 yards and three touchdowns on 43 carries.

Piedmont has lost three games in a row to Parkwood since the start of the 2018 season. This spring, the Wolf Pack defeated the Panthers, 17-14, after trailing by a touchdown entering the fourth quarter.

Monroe at Sun Valley

The other matchup between county teams this week sees Monroe hit the road to take on winless Sun Valley (0-3). Monroe (1-1) is playing its first game since a 43-0 win over Piedmont on Aug. 27.

Sun Valley has lost nine games in a row since defeating Piedmont at the end of the 2019 regular season. The Spartans have lost their three games this fall by an average of 20.7 points per game.

Monroe has won two straight games against Sun Valley, including a 34-0 beatdown this spring. In that game, Monroe ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries and forced three turnovers defensively.

Ardrey Kell at Porter Ridge

After two weeks of quarantining, the Porter Ridge football team returns to action Friday night with a home game against Ardrey Kell. The Pirates (2-0) and Knights (3-0) are both undefeated this fall.

This will be Porter Ridge’s first game since a 34-10 win over West Cabarrus on Aug. 27. Through two games, senior quarterback Myles Carroll has completed 17-of-21 attempts for 230 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions, while senior running back O’Marion Taylor has carried the ball 29 times for 183 yards and a score.

Porter Ridge junior safety Stephan Zayachkowsky is averaging 10 tackles per game and also has an interception.

Ardrey Kell is coming off a 38-21 win over Weddington last week and has defeated three Union County teams (Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge and Weddington) this season.

This is the first time Porter Ridge has played Ardrey Kell since the 2008 season. On that occasion, the Pirates fell to the Knights, 44-10.

Marvin Ridge at Alexander Central

Marvin Ridge carries a 2-1 record into its road game against Alexander Central (3-1).

The Mavericks’ last game was a 26-7 loss to Ardrey Kell on Sept. 3. Alexander Central, meanwhile, is coming off a 28-8 win over R-S Central last week. The Cougars have three players with at least 200 rushing yards already this season, and as a team, Alexander Central has averaged 287.5 yards per game.

Marvin Ridge has been led offensively this season by sophomore quarterback Evan Medders, who has completed 26-of-40 passes for 448 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions while also running for 149 yards and two more scores on 28 carries.

Sophomores Nate Rawls and Finlay Mitchell are averaging 9 tackles each per game for the Mavericks this season and senior Brady Villa tops the team with four sacks and seven QB hurries.

Robinson at Cuthbertson

The Cuthbertson football team will try to snap its three-game losing streak this Friday as it hosts undefeated Robinson (4-0). The Cavaliers (1-3) are coming off a 34-16 loss to South Mecklenburg last Friday.

Robinson is 4-0 and has won its four games by an average of 21.3 points per game. The Bulldogs have shut out two opponents this season and are giving up less than seven points per game this fall.

In a loss to South Meck last week, the Cavaliers ran for over 200 yards on the ground, led by senior A.J. Colombo, who carried the ball 18 times for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Cuthbertson senior linebacker Anthony Goodloe had 16 tackles against South Neck, including 10 solos. His 43 tackles (10.6 tackles per game) leads the Cavaliers. He also has an interception and a blocked kick this season.

The last time these two teams played, on Sept. 13, 2019, Cuthbertson won 31-7 while holding Robinson to less than 250 yards of total offense.

Forest Hills at Montgomery

The Forest Hills football team will try to get back above .500 this week as it travels to face Montgomery Central. The Yellow Jackets (2-2) are coming off a 41-10 loss to Charlotte Latin last week.

Montgomery Central is 0-2 so far this season but has not played since a 34-8 loss to Thomasville on Aug. 27. In Week 1, the Timberwolves fell to West Mecklenburg in overtime, 35-28.

Forest Hills has averaged a little over 200 yards per game offensively this season. Sophomore Jordan Bennett has carried the ball 36 times for 188 yards and four touchdowns so far this fall.

Forest Hills sophomore Joshua Rivera had two interceptions against Latin and has a team-high three picks this season.

Forest Hills defeated Montgomery Central, 20-12, during the spring season thanks to two touchdown passes by quarterback Jayden McDougall.

Union Academy at Lake Norman Charter

The Union Academy football team will look for its first win of the season Friday night as it hits the road to face Lake Norman Charter. The Cardinals (0-4) have lost their four games this fall by an average of 51.3 points per game.

Lake Norman, meanwhile, is 2-1 and coming off a 14-9 loss to Hickory Grove Christian last week. The Knights average 182.0 rushing yards per game.

Union Academy’s last outing saw the Cardinals fall to Mount Island Charter, 68-12. This is Union Academy’s final game before starting conference play next week at home against Mount Pleasant.
