The Weddington High boys basketball team remains far and away the best team in Union County.
The Warriors are 14-0 overall and 2-0 in Southern Carolina Conference play. Weddington has won 32 straight games since the end of the 2019-20 season and sits in the No. 1 spot in The Enquirer-Journal’s Super Six Boys Poll.
Weddington has four players averaging at least 10 points per game, led by senior Chase Lowe, who is averaging 17.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Other Weddington players averaging double-figures are seniors Kyle Frazier (15.1) and A.J. Cook (13.8) and junior Evan Morton (10.6).
Ranked No. 2 in the Super Six is Sun Valley, which is 12-4 overall and 1-1 in SCC play.
The Spartans are coming off a 44-38 win over Marvin Ridge last Friday. The Spartans have been led this season by sophomore Tyree White, who is averaging 17.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game.
Sun Valley is having a bounce-back season after going 7-7 overall in 2020. The Spartans play Piedmont at home Friday night.
No. 3 in this edition of the Boys Super Six is Porter Ridge, which is currently 10-4 overall. The Pirates are the only team other than Weddington with a perfect SCC record.
The Pirates have won five straight games since a 70-58 loss to Carmel Christian on Dec. 17.
Porter Ridge’s top offensive performer this season has been junior Kyler Harris, who is averaging 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game. Seniors Isaiah Williams (12.9), Greg Wenger Jr. (12.4) and Jacob Anderson (11.8) are all averaging more than 11 points per game.
No. 4 in the Super Six boys poll is Cuthbertson, which is currently 9-5 and 1-1 in the SCC standings. The Cavaliers have lost two games in a row but still sit in striking distance in SCC play.
Cuthbertson is looking for its first 10-win season since 2018-19. The Cavaliers last finished a season above .500 in 2015-16, when they went 17-8 under former head coach Mike Helms.
Also ranked among the Super Six Boys Poll are two teams from the Rocky River Conference.
Sitting at No. 5 is Monroe, which is currently 5-5 overall and 2-0 in RRC play. The Redhawks have won two in a row since losing three straight games earlier this month.
Monroe last played Friday, when it defeated Central Academy, 77-39. The Redhawks were led by senior Elliott Reed, who totaled 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.
The final team in the Super Six Boys Poll is Forest Hills, which has rebounded from an uncharacteristically poor start to go 2-0 in its first two league games.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Anson on Friday, 68-47. Forest Hills has lost just one conference game since the start of the 2017-18 season.
