MATTHEWS — After winning the Patriot Classic Tournament at Independence High last month, the Weddington High Warriors were well prepared heading into the start of conference play Tuesday night. Head coach, Gary Ellington’s team ran away from rival Sun Valley during a 65-40 victory on their home court.

The win gives the Warriors a 12-0 record this season (1-0 in Southern Carolina Conference) and extends their winning streak to 30 games dating back to last season. They went undefeated last season, winning 3A state title. The WHS boys last lost in the fourth-round of the playoffs to Freedom in 2020. Leading the way for Weddington on Tuesday were seniors Chase Lowe and Kyle Frazier, who led all scorers with 18 points each.

“(Sun Valley) is a very good team,” Lowe said. “Coming into the game, we just had to make sure we play together and play our game. We were confident that we were going to win if we play the right way.”

On the strength of Frazier’s three field goals in the first quarter, Weddington jumped ahead 15-2. Frazier, a 6-foot-3 forward, also pulled down 12 rebounds throughout the evening.

Weddington went into the halftime break with a 16-point lead, 29-13 lead. The Warriors, as a team, shot 7-of-23 from three-point range.

“I thought in the first half, we took a lot of tough shots, and our ball movement wasn’t good enough to get the shots that we wanted,” Ellington said. “We’re the type of team that if shots are falling, we can be electric … I thought at halftime, we made good adjustments ...”

Daniel Valentine emerged in the third period for the Spartans, scoring four field goals and a free throw. However, after three quarters, the Warriors had an 18-point lead (43-25). Lowe, a 6-foot-5 guard, scored seven of his 18 points in the final quarter for Weddington.

“Offensively, we struggled to score,” Sun Valley head coach Keith Mason said. “We need to attack the basket more to get easier buckets and capitalize when we make teams turn the ball over.”

Sun Valley is now 10-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Spartans will host Mount Pleasant (9-5 record) on Thursday before hosting Marvin Ridge on Friday.
