MATTHEWS — The Weddington Warriors wrestling team kicked off the season on Wednesday (Nov. 17), defeating Ardrey Kell 46-27 while falling to Stuart Cramer (46-33) and Mallard Creek (40-39) on their home mat.
Weddington won 21 out of 41 matches on the day.
The Warriors had five unbeaten wrestlers on Wednesday: sophomore 106-pounder Alex King (3-0), junior 152-pounder Bennett DiCarlo (3-0), junior 138-pounder Ethan Lucado (3-0), senior 145-pounder Devin King (3-0) and senior 195-pounder Janyd Houghton (3-0).
Some of the Warriors’ wrestlers are still playing on the football team, which made the playoffs.
“We are going to be really solid,” said WHS coach Shane Rimmer. “We are missing a few of our football players who are still playing and (we’re) trying to plug holes. We had a bunch of young guys start tonight, so we’ll do the best that we can do and try to get better.”
Against Mallard Creek (3-0 team record), the Warriors jumped ahead with three pins (18-0) before giving up a pin to sophomore 138-pounder Trey O’Connor (2-1) to make the score 18-6. King then defeated 145-pounder Lukas Boucher (1-2) in a 9-2 decision, followed by a pin from DiCarlo. The Mavericks found their hopes of a comeback with a pin from senior Da’Vion Crawford-Harris (3-0) and a decision win in overtime by 170-pounder Tyquan Bolden (3-0).
When Mallard Creek tied the match at 33-33, Alex King got a pin for the Warriors before the Mavericks came back to win with a pin, thanks to 113-pounder Cameron Stinson (3-0). Stinson (33-0 record in Spring 2021) won an individual title in the 106-pound class at the 4A state tournament last season.
Weddington will wrestle at the Roughedge Rumble on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Parkwood High School. Other county teams; including Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Porter Ridge, and Sun Valley, will participate.
