The Sun Valley High volleyball team has opened up a sizable lead in the Southern Carolina Conference heading into the new year.

The Spartans defeated Charlotte Catholic, 3-1, on Tuesday night to move to a perfect 11-0 in the SCC standings, three matches ahead of Marvin Ridge, which sits in second place at 8-3. Sun Valley has now clinched a share of the Southern Carolina Conference title for the first time in program history.

The Spartans have been led offensively this season by sophomore Hailey Pearce, who tops the team in kills (82) and ranks second in blocks. Senior Taylor Parker leads all county players with 67 service aces, while sophomore Amaya Hall has 198 assists.

Weddington 3, Marvin Ridge 2

Weddington rallied from a set down to force a fifth set and eventually defeat Marvin Ridge, 3-2, on the road Tuesday. This marks the first time the Warriors have defeated the Mavericks twice in the same season since 2009.

Prior to this season, Weddington (8-4) had lost 26 of its past 27 matches against Marvin Ridge (8-3). The Mavericks have lost multiple conference matches this season for the first time under head coach Brook Hammers.

With a conference title now likely out of the question, both the Warriors and Mavericks will turn their attention to the postseason. First, though, Marvin Ridge has a date with Sun Valley on Jan. 5, while the Warriors return to action after the break against Piedmont.

Porter Ridge 3, Garinger 0Porter Ridge swept Garinger on Monday to move to 9-2 in the Southwestern 4A Conference standings, two matches back of Myers Park for first place in the league.

The Pirates were led Monday by junior Sydney Rutledge and sophomore Megan Brandon, who combined for 15 kills. Porter Ridge also racked up 29 service aces on 73 attempts and held Garinger to 15 total points across all three sets.

The Pirates will face Rocky River next Wednesday before opening up the new year on Jan. 5 against Myers Park. Porter Ridge has lost eight matches in a row to the Mustangs and hasn’t defeated them since a 3-1 win on Oct. 18, 2016.

Mountain Island Charter 3, Union Academy 1

Union Academy fell to 9-3 on Tuesday with a loss to undefeated Mountain Island Charter, which currently leads the PAC 7 Conference with a perfect 12-0 record. The Cardinals sit three matches back in third place.

Three Cardinals have at least 50 kills this season, led by junior Ryleigh Clayborn (75). Clayborn also leads the team in blocks (17), while senior Savanna Brooks leads UA in service aces (32) and while ranking third in kills (54).
