MONROE — The Union Academy FFA Meats Evaluation Team competed in the NC State FFA Meat Evaluation Career Development Events.
Teams from across the state had to identify over 100 retail cuts of beef, lamb and pork. They also had to place a class of ribeye steaks based on both quality and yield. Finally, students had to take a comprehensive exam on Meat Storage and Handling, Meat Cookery Methods, Live Animal Care and Handling, Meat Purchasing, and Legislative History.
Union Academy FFA placed first overall in the State and was crowned the 2021 State Champion FFA Meats Evaluation Team. The team will now represent NC at the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana in October. Senior Kaleb Pope said: “It was different practicing for the contest in a hybrid learning environment, but once again hard work and dedication from the team paid off.”
Individually, UA placed all four team members in the top 10. Gracie Williams was the high scoring individual overall followed by Isaac Williams (4th overall), Kaleb Pope (5th overall), and Cade Stegall (7th overall). UA is coached by UA agriculture teacher Michael Alexander.
