Heading into the holiday break, there’s a clear-cut top boys team in Union County.

The Weddington High boys basketball team is once again the class of the county and headlines this edition of The Enquirer-Journal’s Super Six Boys Basketball Poll. The Warriors are the county’s only undefeated team at 9-0, and they’ve outscored their opponents by an average of 24.8 points per game.

Leading the charge for Weddington this season has been 6-foot-5 senior guard Chase Lowe, who leads the team in points (17.3), rebounds (8.3) and assists (4.3) per game. The Warriors also have three other players averaging at least 10 points per game — seniors Kyle Frazier (15.7) and A.J. Cook (14.4) and junior Evan Morton (10.3).

Weddington has won 27 straight games dating back to last season, and the Warriors are the reigning 3A state champions.

Coming in at No. 2 in the Super Six is Sun Valley, which has won three games in a row and sits at 8-2 overall heading into the holiday break.

The Spartans defeated West Stanly, 69-27, at home Tuesday night. Junior Kaelen Marsh led all scorers with 14 points in what was Sun Valley’s fourth straight win.

Sun Valley has a county player of the year candidate in sophomore Tyree White, a 5-foot-9 point guard who entered the week averaging 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Juniors Will Brown (11.6) and Keegan Mason (10.2) are also averaging double digit scoring this season.

The No. 3 team in the Super Six is Cuthbertson, which has shocked the surrounding area by opening the season 7-1.

The Cavaliers’ only loss of the season was Monday, 67-60, against Charlotte Catholic. Cuthbertson returns to action next Tuesday against undefeated Central Cabarrus in a holiday tournament game.

The Cavaliers are currently averaging 68.9 points per game. Cuthbertson averaged just 51.6 points per game in 2021 while going 7-7 overall.

Coming in at No. 4 in the Super Six is Porter Ridge. The Pirates are currently 5-4, but they’ve lost four straight after starting the year 5-0.

Porter Ridge has four players averaging at least 10 points per game: seniors Isaiah Williams (13.7), Gregory Wenger (13.0) and Jacob Anderson (10.5) and junior Kyler Harris (12.2).

Three of Porter Ridge’s four losses have come by single digits. The Pirates will try to turn things around next Tuesday as they start a holiday tournament in South Carolina.

Monroe ranks No. 5 in the County poll.

The Redhawks have lost three straight games since starting the season 3-2. Monroe’s top player this season has been senior Shaleak Knotts, who is averaging 17.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Forest Hills, meanwhile, ranks No. 6. The Yellow Jackets are 3-6 overall after a 76-52 loss to Salisbury on the road Monday night. The last time the Yellow Jackets lost at least six games in a season was 2014-15, when they went 20-7 overall.
