The 4A cross country state championships will take place Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

The Cuthbertson High girls cross country team is looking for its fourth straight state championship after winning three consecutive N.C. 3A titles. The Cavaliers won the 4A midwest regional last weekend, edging out rival Weddington for first place.

Cuthbertson had the top-two finishers in the girls race. Winning the race with a time of 18 minutes and 19.17 seconds over 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) was junior Alyssa Preisano, while sophomore Stella Kermes finished second with a time of 18:20.32. Weddington sophomore Grace Hanson and junior Elizabeth Ritter finished third and fourth, respectively.

Last year, Cuthbertson won the 3A state championship meet by a pretty healthy margin over second-place Weddington. The Cavaliers had the first-place finisher, senior Madeline Hill, who finished in a time of 18:11.91. Preisano finished last year’s 3A championship race in 18:16.96.

The winner of the 4A race at last year’s championships — Pinecrest graduate Carmen Alder — finished the race in 17:47.3. Alder’s sister, Vanessa — who is a junior this season — finished in second, but her time was well behind at 18:42.73.

Cuthbertson only had one member of its boys team — senior Gage Austin — qualify for the boys 4A state meet. Austin finished last year’s 3A race in 18th with a time of 16:36.51.

Expected to challenge for the boys title this season is Weddington, which had both its girls and boys teams qualify for the state meet. The Warriors finished in second at the 4A midwest regionals, one point behind winner Mount Tabor.

Weddington’s top finisher in the race was senior Isaac Clark, who placed third with a time of 16:02.1; juniors Chauncey Chen and Caden Townshend also had top-10 finishes.

Marvin Ridge also looks like it could make some noise on the boys side. Mavericks’ senior Ethan Snyder finished the midwest regional race in fourth with a time of 16:02.53, while junior RJ Gahan and senior Aneesh Duggirala placed among the top 20.

Porter Ridge junior Jacob Laney will represent his program. Laney finished the midwest regional race in second with a time of 15:41.66. Last year’s boys 4A championship race was won in a time of 15:44.65 by former Ardrey Kell senior Murphy Smith.
