Hunter Tyson added a memorable moment to what has been a storybook season for the fifth-year senior at Clemson when he made a 3-pointer above the top of the key with 11 seconds left that gave his team a 51-50 home win over Virginia Tech on Saturday (Jan. 21).
With Clemson trailing by two, Tyson caught an inbounds pass from the sideline and pump faked to get a defender off his feet before using a relocation dribble that gave him a clean look at the rim.
A 2018 graduate of Piedmont High, the 6-foot-8 Tyson had his 11th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of playing time.
The win keeps Clemson in first place out of 15 teams in the ACC with an 8-1 league record (16-4 overall. The Tigers have a one-game lead on second-place Virginia (7-2, 15-3 overall).
Tyson, who leads his team in scoring and rebounding, is arguably the biggest reason Clemson is surpassing expectations this year. The Tigers were picked to finish 11th in the ACC by the media in the preseason. Tyson is having his best college season by far — he ranks among the top 10 in the ACC in at least six categories, and his 11 double-doubles stand fifth in the nation.
Tyson ranks second in the ACC in double-doubles, fourth in rebounding (10 per game), fifth in free throw percentage (83.3), ninth in 3-pointers made per game (2.2), ninth in 3-point percentage (40.8), sixth in minutes played (35.2 per game) and 11th in scoring (15.9 points per game).
The Tigers will host Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Jan. 24, starting at 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.
