The Porter Ridge High boys soccer team pulled out a 4-3 win over Monroe on Monday to move to 5-1-1 on the season. The Pirates have gone 4-0-1 since a 2-0 loss to Mooresville back on Aug. 26.
The Pirates will play three games next week before opening Southern Carolina Conference play Sept. 28 at home against Piedmont. Porter Ridge went 5-4-4 during the 2021 spring season and missed out on the 4A state playoffs.
Monroe is 1-6 on the year and has lost four straight games since a 3-1 win over Chambers on Aug. 25. The Redhawks also played Piedmont on Wednesday (late score). Monroe will start Rocky River Conference play Sept. 28 against Anson.
Cuthbertson 3, Watauga 1
The Cuthbertson boys soccer snapped a two-match winless streak with a 3-1 win over Catawba on Monday. The Cavaliers (3-1-1) were coming off a 3-2 loss to Butler last week.
Cuthbertson’s goals were scored by seniors Anthony Brown and Billy Soares as well as junior Garrett Allen. Soares and senior Gabe Of contributed assists. Through five games this fall, Brown is Cuthbertson’s top scorer, leading the team both in goals (four) and assists (four).
The Cavaliers are coming off a 9-4-1 campaign during the spring that didn’t result in a playoff appearance.
Carmel Christian 3, Marvin Ridge 0
The Marvin Ridge boys soccer team dropped its third straight game Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to Carmel Christian. The Mavericks are still winless through eight games so far this fall (0-6-2).
Head coach Jason Zak’s team has been outscored 20-5 in its eight games this season. The Mavericks are well on their way to their first below-.500 finish in program history.
Before this, Marvin Ridge’s lowest win total in a full season was 14 games, which the school has done on a few occasions. This past spring, the Mavericks finished the shortened spring season 11-2-2 overall. Marvin Ridge has won three boys soccer state titles since the 2009n season.
Piedmont 1, West Stanly 1
The Piedmont boys soccer team used a second-half equalizer to earn a draw against West Stanly on Monday.
Piedmont’s goal was scored by senior Shea Kodikara. The Panthers (3-1-2) have had eight players score at least one goal so far this fall. Leading the way for Piedmont offensively are sophomore Hever Delgado and senior Mickey Duda, who both have three goals each.
Piedmont is 2-0-2 wince a 3-0 loss to Central Academy on Aug. 24. Piedmont faced Monroe on Wednesday (late score) and plays two Union County teams next week — Forest Hills and Parkwood — before opening SCC play Sept. 27 against Porter Ridge.
Forest Hills 3, Mountain Island Charter 1
The Forest Hills boys improved to 6-1-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over Mountain Island Charter on Monday. The Yellow Jackets have been undefeated since a 3-0 loss to Concord on the first day of the regular season.
Scoring the goals for Forest Hills on Monday were junior Oscar Mendoza, sophomore Jonathan Castillo and freshman Cristian Jiminez. Jiminez and senior Humberto Dominquez both have six goals and three assists this season for the Yellow Jackets.
Head coach Mike Gee’s team played again Wednesday (late score). The Yellow Jackets have two more games before opening RRC play Sept. 28 at home against Parkwood.
Robinson 1, Union Academy 0
The Union Academy boys soccer team dropped its opening game of the Yadkin Valley Conference play Monday with a 1-0 loss to Robinson. The Cardinals are now 3-4 so far this fall.
Union Academy played another conference opponent, Gray Stone Day, on Wednesday (late score). The Cardinals are coming off a 2021 spring campaign that saw them finish 7-6-1 overall.
Through seven games, Union Academy top scorer is senior Liam MacKinnon, who has four goals and one assist to his tally. The only other Cardinal with more than one goal this fall is junior Corbin Esquivel, who has two goals and three assists.
