MONROE — Junior quarterback Khamoni Robinson threw for a career-high 387 yards and seven touchdowns on Friday (Nov. 12), leading the Monroe RedHawks to an easy 60-29 home win over JM Robinson in the second round of the 2A football playoffs; Robinson’s favorite target was senior Maryland commit Shaleak Knotts, who caught seven passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns.

Monroe improved to 8-1 overall and ended Robinson’s season at 10-2.

Robinson eclipsed the 2,000-yard passing mark (2,114) and he now has 29 touchdown passes this season against just four interceptions. Monroe had 612 yards of total offense on the night, and has averaged 58.5 points in the two playoff games.

“Anytime that you can put that ball up and get seven touchdowns, that means we’re doing some things right,” Monroe head coach Johnny Sowell said. “(Robinson) did a great job.”

On the second play of the game, Robinson found Knotts for a 70-yard score. Robinson threw to Knotts again late in the first quarter for an 11-yard score that put Monroe head 14-0.

Robinson threw two more touchdown passes in the second quarter — one to senior Elliot Reid (21 yards) and another to Knotts (32 yards).

Trailing 25-0, the Bulldogs got on the board when junior running back William Suttles found a hole up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown run with 5:35 left in the first half.

J.M. Robinson pulled to within 25-15 when senior quarterback Blue Monroe (12-of-20 for 120 yards) scored from 6 yards out and then added the 2-point conversion. However, on the Redhawks’ ensuing drive, Knotts caught his fourth touchdown of the half from 32 yards out to extend the lead 35-14.

“We didn’t really make a lot of adjustments,” Sowell said. “Everything we felt like doing in the first half was working. … The offensive line did a great job and our receivers got open and ran very good routes.”

Both teams traded a pair of touchdowns going into the third quarter. Blue Monroe completed a 19-yard TD pass to Daevin Hobbs with 8:23 left for the Bulldogs, and sophomore Nate Crosby scored on an eight-yard run for the Redhawks. Monroe rushed 25 times for 225 yards on the night, led by Crosby, who carried 12 times for 105 yards. Crosby now has 839 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this season on 105 carries (8.0 yards per carry); he also has two receiving touchdowns.

Knotts has 31 catches for 611 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Reed finished Friday’s game with six catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns; he now has 35 receptions for 598 yards and six scores in nine games.

Robinson completed his final touchdown of the night to senior Jaikhob Covington (10 yards), and freshman Zion Lindsey scoredon a 43-yard run to close the scoring spree for Monroe. The touchdown run was Lindsey’s first as a varsity player.

Monroe junior linebacker Elijah Shaw had a team-high 11 tackles, including three for loss, on Friday, and Knotts contributed 10 tackles on defense. Monroe had eight sacks, including two each by sophomore Brajon Allen and junior Cread Simpson.

The No.7-seeded Redhawks will take its seven-game win streak to No.2-seed East Surry this Friday night, Nov. 19, in the third round of the 2A tournament. The undefeated Cardinals (10-0) defeated Forbush in a 37-20 home win last Friday.
