The Sun Valley High volleyball team opened Southern Carolina Conference play with a 3-0 sweep over Weddington on the road Thursday night (Sept. 9).
The Spartans entered the match 2-2 overall after non-conference play. Sun Valley is looking to win its second straight regular season league title under head coach Rachel Henry.
Sun Valley juniors Aaliyah Mitchell and Hailey Pearce have combined for 98 kills and 55 digs so far in 2021. Fellow junior Amaya Hall leads the team with 36 digs, 10 aces and 111 assists.
This was Sun Valley's third straight win over Weddington and their 13th in their past 15 meetings with the Warriors.
Marvin Ridge opened SCC play Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over Cuthbertson. The Mavericks (7-2, 1-0 SCC) have won 24 straight matches over the Cavaliers since the start of the 2009 season.
Cuthbertson's set win in the loss to Marvin Ridge was the first time the Cavaliers had won a set against Marvin Ridge since a 3-1 loss on Sep. 17, 2015. Before Wednesday, Marvin Ridge had swept Cuthbertson in 15 straight matches.
The Cavaliers rallied from the loss Thursday with a 3-2 win over Mallard Creek. The Cavaliers are currently 3-5 overall.
Porter Ridge has started the season 7-0 overall.
The only other undefeated volleyball team in the county is Union Academy, which is 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A conference so far this season. The Cardinals also played Friday night against Mountain Island Charter (late score).
Currently, Union Academy junior Anna Ungerer leads all county players with 96 kills, and Cardinals senior Ryleigh Clayborn isn't too far behind with 72. Junior setter Lauren Munday currently leads all county players with a whopping 214 assists, an average of 8.6 assists per set.
The Rocky River Conference boasts four Union County schools, and all four will be hard-pressed to win a league title this season. Parkwood, Forest Hills, Central Academy and Monroe are a combined 8-18 so far this season, while West Stanly and Anson are a combined 11-6.
West Stanly is the favorite to win the RRC after going 13-1 overall and 9-0 in conference play in 2020.
