STALLINGS — Nurses are in high demand. Teneika Funderburk recently opened Nursing Careers Institute, located at 621-F Stallings Rd., that will help provide a path for adult students interested in a career in healthcare.
Funderburk is a Register Nurse and she is a mental health clinical instructor for UNCC. She is the owner and one of the teachers at Nursing Careers Institute, which is a state approved school licensed by the NC Division of Health Science Regulators.
The program is designed to help students who are working, be able to fit the classes into their schedule, be affordable and move at a fast pace. Tuition is $500 with some additional fees for books and supplies.
“Many people in this industry are low income and are trying to find a career,” Funderburk said. “That was one of my main goals to offer it at night, so they could still maintain a job and go to school.”
The class schedule is accelerated. Day classes are from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday through Friday and night classes are three evenings a week from 6-9 for 4 to 6 weeks and the last week is in the field to provide experience.
After completing the course, students take a national CNA assessment test; there is a 70 question written exam and students must successfully perform five skills. They are taught 23 skills and don’t know which five the evaluator will choose and the Nursing Careers Institute provides a teacher to help specifically with the skills test.
Once they pass, they can find work at hospitals, nursing homes and home health agencies.
The first graduating class from Nursing Careers Institute will be presented during a Grand Opening celebration for the school on April 1 at 10 a.m.
“The CNA program is a jumpstart to a new healthcare career,” Funderburk said. “One student we had wants to be an ultrasound tech, that requires you to be a CNA first and a lot of nursing schools require you to be a CNA before you enter into their nursing program.”
Becoming a CNA can also help students get the hours of work experience they need to pursue other healthcare careers.
