The Marvin Ridge girls basketball team opened up the 2021 season with a 62-52 win over Monroe on Wednesday, delivering new head coach Steve Lenahan his first win since taking over the Mavericks.

Three Mavericks scored in double digits, led by freshman Kayla Lee — who had a game-high 18 points in her first career high school game. Juniors Kyndall Shivers and Elizabeth Szempruch both had 10 points for the Mavs.

The Redhawks (0-1), meanwhile, got 16 points from both junior Maia Price and freshman Saniya Wallace. Head coach Leroy Osborne’s team is hoping for a much better campaign in 2021 after going 1-22 overall in 2019-20.

Marvin Ridge returns to action next Tuesday on the road against Cuthbertson. The Redhawks don’t have a game scheduled for next week.

Weddington 53, Parkwood 33After losing its top scorer from a season ago (Karrah Katzbach), the Weddington girls had no problem defeating Parkwood in both teams’ season-opener on Wednesday night.

The Warriors jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead. Weddington (1-0) had two players in double figures — sophomore Tatum Bowen (16) and senior Emily Cunningham. Bowen made 4-of-6 three-pointers, while the rest of the team was a combined 5-for-16 from beyond the arc. Cunningham also pulled in 12 rebounds.

Parkwood, coming off a 16-11 season, will play Charlotte Catholic at home on Tuesday, while Weddington will face Sun Valley.

Cuthbertson 66, Sun Valley 30The Cuthbertson girls opened the 2021 season with a 36-point win over Sun Valley at home Wednesday night. The Cavaliers have now won each of the past five meetings and eight of the past nine games overall between the two teams.

Cuthbertson was paced offensively by senior Maddie Dillinger, the reigning Union County girls player of the year. Dillinger, a 6-foot forward, had 25 points on 10-of-24 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Junior Ruby Williams scored 14 points and added four steals and five rebounds, while sophomore Amanda Sacoto hauled in 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

The Cavaliers are looking to win at least a share of the Southern Carolina Conference title for the third straight season under head coach Joel Allen. Cuthbertson has advanced to at least the state semifinals each of the past two seasons.
