INDIAN TRAIL – Senior free safety Tommy Miller intercepted a pass with 1:30 left in the game, sealing Metrolina Christian Academy’s 13-7 home win over Covenant Day on Friday.

Miller, who has been a varsity starter since his freshman year, finished with a team-high 13 tackles, including 10 solos. He now has eight takeaways in his career.

“I got over top of the receiver and I jumped for the ball and I got it,” Miller said, describing his game-clinching interception.

Metrolina improved to 3-1 on the season while Covenant Day is now 1-1.

Junior quarterback Reid Eighmy, who transferred from Cuthbertson, drove Metrolina down the field on the Warriors’ opening drive and scored on a 4-yard run within the first five minutes of the game.

Metrolina’s defense already has two shutouts this season, and is allowing just 2.3 points per game in the three wins.

The Warriors’ defense forced three turnovers in Week 4, including an interception by junior Hayden Hyman and a forced fumble by senior Gunnar Moan that was recovered by senior Julian Mercer.

Metrolina scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a fourth down in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Tucker Wren threw a 22-yard TD pass to Zach O’Donoghue to extend Metrolina’s lead 13-0.

“It was a great play call by (Metrolina head coach Thomas) Langley on fourth and four out of the trick book,” Wren said of his TD pass. “Huge effort by Zach O’Donoghue to make that catch and it was a great play call.”

Trailing 13-0, Covenant Day QB Daniel Nelson drove his team into the Warriors’ red zone and cut into the deficit with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Weston Shoudy with 4:25 left in the game.

Langley is pleased with where his team is after Week 4.

“We are in a good spot right now,” Langley said. “Anytime that you have good players that come in and help us out, it just adds depth to our roster, which is great. We were hard on our guys this week in practice, and they responded tonight.”

Metrolina Christian will travel to winless Southlake Christian on Friday, Sept. 17.
