Former Porter Ridge High quarterback Grayson McCall saved his best for Coastal Carolina’s last game of the 2021 season.

Playing in the Tailgreeter Cure Bowl, McCall led the Chanticleers to a 47-41 win over Northern Illinois. Coastal trailed by five points, 38-33, entering the fourth quarter, but it was all Chants down the stretch.

McCall finished the game 22-of-30 for 315 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. The quarterback’s final two touchdowns came with under 10 minutes remaining to give the Chanticleers the lead for good.

The win was Coastal’s first-ever bowl game victory.

McCall had quite the redshirt sophomore season for the Chanticleers in 2021. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound QB completed 176-of-241 passes (73%) for 2,873 yards and 27 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

McCall’s completion percentage of 73.0 was the 17th-best by a quarterback in a single season in college football history. The current single-season record belongs to former Alabama quarterback and current New England Patriot Mac Jones, who completed 77.4% of his passes in 2020.

McCall will now decide how he wants to progress his career. He is eligible to declare for the NFL Draft, but he recently told the Myrtle Beach Sun News he plans to play college football for at least one more season.

McCall told the Sun News the thought of transferring to a Power 5 school has “been a thought in the back of my mind.”

McCall has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in college football based on his accomplishments. Last week, McCall became one of four NCAA football players to receive a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal from Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and his new apparel line: Brady.

Brady will launch on Jan. 12, 2022 and focus on “training wear and casual clothing.”
