For the first time in a long time, a team not named Cuthbertson headlines The Enquirer-Journal’s Super Six Union County Girls Basketball Poll.
That distinction now belongs to Marvin Ridge, which is 11-4 overall and 2-0 in Southern Carolina Conference play. The Mavericks defeated Cuthbertson in their SCC opener on Jan. 4 and have won four straight games since a 55-27 loss to Rock Hill right before Christmas.
With 11 wins, Marvin Ridge has matched its win total from 2019-20, the last time the Mavericks played a full season before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cuthbertson (10-5) is currently the No. 2 team in the Super Six. The Cavaliers have won two games in a row since the loss to Marvin Ridge.
The Cavaliers defeated Porter Ridge, 42-26, on Friday, led by senior Ruby Williams, who scored 23 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Because it’s exam week, there are no games on school nights this week. Cuthbertson plays at Weddington on Friday.
Forest Hills is the No. 3 team in this edition of the Super Six. The Yellow Jackets are currently 10-3 and 2-0 in Rocky River Conference play.
Forest Hills has won five straight games since a 57-46 loss to Salisbury on Dec. 29. The Yellow Jackets have won by an average of 37.2 points per game during this most recent stretch of play.
The Jackets have been led by junior Jamyah Blakeney, who is averaging 22.4 points, 5.0 assists and 3.4 steals per game.
Monroe is the No. 4 team in the Super Six Poll.
The Redhawks are 9-3 overall and 2-0 in Rocky River Conference play.
The Redhawks have been led this season by junior Dynastee Parker, who is averaging 15.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.
Sophomore Saniya Wallace is averaging 11.2 points, 3.4 assists and 5.1 steals per game.
Another Rocky River Conference team, Parkwood, is the No. 5 team in the Super Six poll.
The Wolf Pack are 11-5 overall and 1-1 in league play so far in 2021-22.
Parkwood bounced back from a 57-51 loss to Forest Hills last Tuesday to defeat West Stanly, 64-56. Parkwood’s leading scorer right now is senior Shimya Taylor, who is averaging 17.1 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.4 steals per game.
Two other Parkwood players are averaging at least 10 points — Jade Washington (12.7) and Peyton Collins (10.3).
Rounding out the Super Six Girls Poll is Sun Valley, which is 9-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Spartans are coming off a 17-point loss to Marvin Ridge on Friday.
Sun Valley’s top scorer is junior Lindsey Avant, who is averaging 10.1 points. 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. Sophomore Aree Meaders is averaging 8.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game.
