The girls soccer team at Weddington High reached the semifinal round of the 4A playoffs with a 3-1 home win over Northwest Guilford on Thursday. Top-seeded Weddington eliminated No. 12 seed Northwest Guilford.
WHS freshman Paige Santos assisted on the first goal to freshman Abby Hoover to tie the match. Santos also scored a goal to help Weddington improved to 21-4 with its 12th straight win, and ended the Vikings’ season at 17-3-1.
Santos leads WHS in goals with 17 goals and she also has five assists on the season.
“Before the game, I told them if you go down, you just have to settle and make your chances when they come,” said WHS coach Powell Williams, “and they did.”
Senior Zoe Key scored the first goal in the second overtime.
The win sets Weddington up for a rematch at home against No. 2 seed Ardrey Kell for a chance to win their first 4A regional title on Tuesday. The Warriors lost to the Knights, 3-0, in their season opener (Feb. 28).
Union Academy 2, Bishop McGuiness 1
The Union Academy girls soccer team rallied to stay alive in the 1A state tournament. Junior Heidi Estrada-Aguilar saved the day, scoring two goals to defeat top-seeded Bishop McGuinness, 2-1, on the road in overtime Thursday.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals are now 22-3. First-year head coach Luis Echeverry has helped UA win eight straight matches.
“We started to find our rhythm before halftime, but we needed to do a better job executing our offense,” he said. “We did a much better job feeding our playmakers in the second half and overtime, and fought incredibly hard to hold onto the lead once we got it.”
Estrada-Aguilar’s first goal was from an assist by junior Katy Cunningham, and her second goal was on a free kick. Junior goalkeeper McKayla Ashfield had 21 saves on the night.
Union Academy will travel to No. 2 seed Christ the King (15-2-3 record) in the state semifinal round. The Crusaders defeated Union Academy in the regional final in 2022.
