WEDDINGTON — Junior Zoe Key scored the only goal of the match in the first half on assist from freshman Paige Santos that lifted Weddington High’s girls soccer team to a 1-0 home win over Lake Norman in the third round of the 4A playoffs on Monday (May 22).
Sophomore Madison Motto played all 80 minutes in goal and had five saves to earn the shutout. The Warriors’ 11th straight win improved their record to 20-4. They concluded Lake Norman’s season at 14-6-2. The Southern Carolina 4A Conference champions (9-1 league record) will host Northwest Guilford (17-2-1) in the fourth round on Thursday, May 26.
Maxpreps ranks Weddington No. 1 in the state among 4A schools and third among all classifications in the state.
Union Academy 4, Thomas Jefferson 2Union Academy Charter School advanced to the fourth round of the 1A girls soccer playoffs with a 4-2 home win over Thomas Jefferson on Monday.The Cardinals improved to 21-3 with their seventh straight victory.
Union Academy, champions of the Yadkin Valley Conference (12-0 league record), ended Thomas Jefferson’s season at 14-4-1. Monday’s match was tied at 1-all at halftime.
The Cardinals are ranked fourth in the state among 1A teams by Maxpreps.
Union Academy will play at Bishop McGuinness for their fourth-round match on Thursday, May 25 (7 p.m.). The Villains started the season 0-3 and have since won 20 in a row, improving their overall record to 20-3.
Pine Lake Prep 5, Forest Hills 0Pine Lake Prep knocked Forest Hills out of the playoffs with a convincing home win on Monday.
Pine Lake Prep improved to 19-1-2 by defeating the Yellow Jackets in the third round of the 2A playoffs.
Champions of the Rocky River Conference (9-1 league record), the Jackets finished the year 16-5-1.
Sophomore Zuleyma Jimenez scored 68 goals and had 22 assists this season for FH. Also eligible to return is junior Rossy Moreno, who had 49 points (16 goals, 17 assists) in 2023. Sophomore Hailey Weingarten also had a productive season with 38 points (12 goals, 14 assists).
The Jackets had young roster in 2023; they will lose senior captain Selena Timons, who finished with 19 goals and a team-best 36 assists.
Forest Hills is eligible to return 12 of its 14 players in 2024. In addition to Timmons, the Yellow Jackets will lose senior fullback Candy Munoz.
Forest Hills’ primary goal keepers, freshman Azaryia Griffin, is eligible to return after having 66 saves in 1,509 minutes played.
