Thanks to a game-winning layup by sophomore Zahra Douglas in overtime, the Marvin Ridge girls basketball team upset Weddington, 60-59, at home Tuesday to move to 3-1 on the season.

Douglas led the way for the Mavericks for most of the night, totaling a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds to help lead her team to the win. Douglas has been one of the bright young stars of the early season and is currently averaging 14.5 points per game through the Mavericks’ first four contests.

The Warriors (3-2) were unable to come up with the win despite a huge game from senior Emily Cunningham, who tallied a game-high 22 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Tatum Bowen (11) and junior Brooke Strong (10) also scored in double figures for head coach Aaron Brown’s team.

Marvin Ridge will be seeking its fourth win on Thursday when it hosts Sun Valley. Weddington, meanwhile, will take on Piedmont on Friday night at home.

Cuthbertson 59, Monroe 24The Cuthbertson girls cruised to their fifth straight win to open the season Tuesday night against Monroe. The Cavaliers had three players score in double figures Tuesday, led by senior Kamaria Sheriff, who totaled 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

Sheriff has been one of Cuthbertson’s best players since missing the first game of the season. In four games, the senior forward has averaged 13.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Senior forward Maddie Dillinger contributed 14 points and sophomore guard Reagan Iovino scored 12 points for the Cavaliers, who have averaged 26 wins over the previous three seasons.

Cuthbertson’s girls are now 83-13 since Dillinger became a varsity starter as a freshman in 2017.

The loss drops Monroe to 1-4 on the season. The Redhawks have an overall record of 2-26 under head coach Leroy Osborne since the start of the 2019-20 season. Monroe will look to right the ship Thursday night against Charlotte Catholic.

Cuthbertson, meanwhile, will try to stay undefeated as it faces Parkwood on Thursday. The Cavaliers have won 13 straight games against Southern Carolina Conference opponents since losing to Charlotte Catholic, 51-46, in overtime on Jan. 24, 2020.

Odds and ends …… Because of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ decision to halt athletics for the next month, the Porter Ridge girls basketball team has had to completely revise its schedule for the second half of the season. The Pirates (1-3) will play Lake Norman on Friday and will play four other conference games before returning to Southwestern 4A Conference play Feb. 9 on the road at Garinger.

… The Forest Hills girls game against Mount Pleasant was postponed Tuesday because of a positive COVID-19 test inside Mount Pleasant’s program. The Yellow Jackets return to action Friday against Central Academy.

… Union Academy was 3-0 on the season ahead of Wednesday’s game against Mountain Island Charter. The Cardinals have three players averaging at least 12 points per game this season, led by senior Savannah Brooks (18.5).
