The Marvin Ridge High girls basketball team improved to 10-4 overall with a 69-25 home win over Nation Ford on Wednesday night. The Mavericks, led by second-year head coach Steve Lenahan, are on a three-game winning streak.
“I couldn’t ask for a better group of players, parents, coaches, and administration to work with,” Lenahan said. “I am hopeful that wins indicate we are moving in the right direction towards the fair team culture we want.”
Senior guard Kyndall Shivers led the Mavericks with 26 points, five assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Reese Fritz contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two steals; teammates Zahra Douglas and Kelsie Robitaille combined for 10 rebounds.
Cuthbertson 58, East Mecklenburg 26
After a conference loss to Marvin Ridge on Tuesday, the Cuthbertson High girls got back on track against East Mecklenburg. The result for head coach Joel Allen’s team was a 32-point home win on Wednesday.
Senior Cornell commit Ruby Williams led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field. Teammates Natalie Bair (15 points) and Amanda Sacoto (14 points) also scored in double digits. Bair made 71% of her shots from three-point range.
Union Academy 56, Mt. Island Charter 27
The Cardinals found their rhythm in a non-conference home win against Mountain Island Charter on Wednesday.
Leading the way for Union Academy were junior Liz Saunders (18 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals) and freshman Paisley Boatright (16 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 steals), who combined to score 34 of the team’s 56 points. Teammate Tamryn Goodson had a team-high 13 rebounds in the victory.
The Cardinals (3-7, 0-2 YVC) will host Bradford Prep next Wednesday.
Odds and ends …
… The Weddington girls lost on the road to Myers Park 77-25 on Wednesday. The loss drops the Warriors to 3-10 overall (0-1 SCC).
… Monroe’s non-conference game versus Central Pageland was postponed, according to head coach Leroy Osborne. The Redhawks currently sit at 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Rocky River Conference play.
