Will Shipley

Will Shipley, a true freshman running back for Clemson University, rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries in the Tigers’ 49-3 home win over South Carolina State last Saturday (Sept. 11).

A five-star recruit, Shipley now has 12 carries for 87 yards and one reception for 11 yards after his first two college games. Shipley was a three-year starter at Weddington and helped the program win back-to-back 3AA state titles in 2018 and 2019. He missed his senior year at WHS after enrolling early at Clemson (1-1 record).

The Tigers, ranked No. 6 nationally in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, play at home on Saturday, Sept. 18, against Georgia Tech starting at 3:30 p.m.

owell shines

UNC Tar Heels junior QB Sam Howell threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 104 yards and two TDs on 11 carries during his team’s 59-17 home win over Georgia State.

Howell, who was voted preseason ACC Player of the Year, was a four-star recruit during his career at Sun Valley High.

Howell has now thrown an ACC record 72 career touchdown passes for North Carolina against 17 interceptions and has competed 64.3% of his passes.

The Heels (1-1 record) host Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m.. UNC is ranked No. 21 in this week’s AP poll.

Emezie has six catches

Former Marvin Ridge High receiver Emeka Emezie, now a fifth-year senior at N.C. State, had a team-best six catches for 92 yards during his team’s 24-10 loss to Mississippi State last Saturday.

Two games into the season, Emezie has 11 receptions for 163 yards. The Wolfpack is now 1-1 on the season.

Emezie now has 180 career catches for 2,256 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Wolfpack.

N.C. State has a home game against Furman on Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m.

McCall lifts Coastal

Former Porter Ridge quarterback Grayson McCall led Coastal Carolina to a 49-22 home win over Kansas in Week 2.

A redshirt sophomore, McCall completed 81% of his passes (17-of-21) for 245 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He’s completing 82.5% of his passes this season (33-of-40).

During his college career, McCall has completed 71.1% of his passes (209-of-294) for 3,020 yards with 30 TD passes and just three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 620 yards and eight touchdowns on 123 attempts (5.0 yards per carry).

Coastal Carolina (2-0 record) moved up one spot to No. 16 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll. The Chanticleers travel to Buffalo on Saturday in a noon start.

Mock has 4 tackles

Former Weddington High middle linebacker Alec Mock had four tackles during Air Force’s 23-3 win over Navy on Saturday.

A 6-3, 230-pound sophomore, Mock now has 17 career tackles and a sack for Air Force.

The Falcons are now 2-0 while Navy dropped to 0-2.

Air Force hosts Utah State on Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m.
