The Porter Ridge football team has lost two straight games after starting the season 3-0. The Pirates look to turn things around this Friday at home against Cuthbertson.

Having lost two straight games to open up Southern Carolina Conference play, the Porter Ridge football team hosts Cuthbertson this Friday as it looks to turn things around.

The Pirates (3-2, 0-2 SCC) are coming off a 27-7 loss to Weddington last week. In the defeat, Porter Ridge was held to just 151 yards of total offense. The Pirates haven’t lost three games in a row since they went 1-10 during the 2015 season.

Cuthbertson (3-4, 1-1 SCC) lost at home to Marvin Ridge last week. The Cavaliers are averaging 37.7 points per game in wins this season and 18.8 points per game in losses. Leading the way for Cuthbertson this season has been senior A.J. Colombo, who is averaging 156.6 all-purpose yards per game and has accounted for nine touchdowns so far this season.

Porter Ridge and Cuthbertson have only met twice before. The Pirates were victorious on both occasions, most recently a 56-35 win on Aug. 17, 2018.

Sun Valley at Weddington

The Weddington football team will try to remain perfect in the SCC standings Friday as it hosts Sun Valley. The Warriors (6-1, 1-0 SCC) have won 19 straight games against conference opponents since a 20-0 loss to Charlotte Catholic back in September 2018.

Sun Valley (2-5, 1-1 SCC) is coming off a 42-14 win over Piedmont last week. This marked the Spartans’ first conference win since defeating the Panthers in the final game of the 2019 regular season. In the win last week, junior Toney McFadden ran for over 200 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.

The Spartans will have to slow down Weddington’s offense, which is averaging 361.1 yards per game so far this season. On the defensive side of the ball, the Warriors are allowing just 9.4 points per game this season.

Weddington has won seven straight games against Sun Valley, including a 43-2 win this spring.

Piedmont at Marvin Ridge

The Marvin Ridge football team will try to keep pace with Weddington in the SCC as they host Piedmont on Friday. The Mavericks are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in SCC play so far.

Marvin Ridge has won conference games over Cuthbertson and Porter Ridge t start league play. The Mavericks boast one of the top defenses in the entire county and are currently allowing just 12.3 points per game so far this fall.

Piedmont (2-5, 0-2 SCC) enters Friday on a three-game losing streak. One of the main bright spots for the Panthers so far in 2021 has been junior running back Layton Duke, who currently leads the county with 788 rushing yards to go with four rushing touchdowns.

Marvin Ridge is 9-1 against Piedmont since the start of the 2007 season. This spring, the Mavericks defeated the Panthers, 19-0, thanks to a pair of passing touchdowns from quarterback Cole Delissio.

Parkwood at Monroe

A matchup between the top two teams in the Rocky River Conference sees Parkwood hit the road to take on Monroe on Friday. The two teams have a combined record of 7-2 and have been perfect in RRC play so dar.

Monroe (3-1, 1-0 RRC) actually played Tuesday night, when they defeated Anson, 49-0. It will be interesting to see how tired the Redhawks are for this matchup, though they have played fewer games than any other county team so far this season.

Parkwood (4-1, 2-0 RRC) defeated West Stanly, 21-7, last week and looks poised to challenge for a conference title this season. The Wolf Pack feature one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the county, as they’ve thrown for 895 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall while also running for 965 yards and another 11 touchdowns.

Monroe is 10-1 in its last 11 meetings against Parkwood, including a 49-14 win against the Wolf Pack this spring. Parkwood narrowly defeated Monroe, 16-14, in the 2019 meeting between the two teams.

West Stanly at Forest Hllls

Coming off a 52-0 beatdown of Anson last week, the Forest Hills football team will look to stay above .500 as they host West Stanly.

The Yellow Jackets (4-3, 1-1 RRC) have not finished a season above .500 since going 8-4 under then head coach John Lowery in 2015. Forest Hills has amassed an overall record of 17-42 since the end of the 2015 season.

West Stanly (2-3, 0-1 SCC) enters Friday’s matchup as losers of three straight games. The Colts have struggled offensively, averaging 17.8 points per game so far this fall.

West Stanly has won three straight games over Forest Hills, including a 21-0 shutout victory during the spring. The last time the Yellow Jackets defeated the Colts was on Oct. 6, 2017.

...Odds and ends...

The Union Academy football team (0-7) plays J.M. Robinson on the road Friday night. The Cardinals have lost their seven games this season by an average of 48.6 points per game.

Metrolina (6-1) plays High Point Christian on Friday. The Warriors fell to HPC, 40-21, during the 2020 fall season.
