The only playoff football game involving two Union County teams sees Cuthbertson hit the road to take on Weddington in the third round of the 4A state tournament.

The Cavaliers (6-6) made it to the third round by upsetting Watauga and Lake Norman in the first two rounds. Cuthbertson boasts one of the top offenses in the county, led by sophomore quarterback Parker Burke and senior offensive weapon A.J. Colombo.

In their matchup during the regular season, a 28-13 Weddington win, Cuthbertson struck first with a trick play that saw Colombo complete a double pass to Keenan Jackson for an 80-yard touchdown. Cuthbertson led 13-0 before Weddington scored the final 28 points of the game.

The Warriors are coming off wins over North Mecklenburg and Marvin Ridge in the first two rounds. Weddington’s offense has been rolling for most of the year. Senior running back Kyle Parsons has totaled 599 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in his last three games.

Meanwhile, seniors Grady Brosterhous and Landyn Backey have connected 68 times for 877 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air this season. Backey caught eight passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns in Weddington’s win over Cuthbertson during the regular season.

Monroe at East SurryThe only other Union County football team alive in the state playoffs is Monroe, which faces East Surry in the third round of the 2A tournament on Friday.

The Redhawks have won eight games in a row since falling to 4A Marvin Ridge in their season-opener back in August. Since then, Monroe has defeated its opponents by an average of 39.5 points per game.

Monroe is coming off a 60-29 win over Jay M. Robinson last Friday that saw junior Khamoni Robinson tie the Union County record with seven touchdown passes. Senior Shaleak Knotts — a Maryland commit — caught seven passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

East Surry, meanwhile, is a perfect 11-0 on the season. The No. 2 seed Cardinals are led by junior quarterback Folger Boaz, who has completed 72.2% of his passes for 2,990 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions and run for 726 yards and another 20 scores.

Boaz — a UNC baseball commit — has also reported an offer from the University of Florida to play football. Boaz’ older brother, Jefferson, is a redshirt freshman quarterback on the UNC football team.

Porter Ridge at ChambersAfter upsetting the defending 4A state champion Grimsley on the road last week, Porter Ridge faces another tough test this Friday at Chambers High.

Chambers is 11-1 on the season and enters Friday night on a six-game winning streak. The Cougars are averaging 40.8 points per game this season while allowing their opponents an average of 14.4 points per game.

Porter Ridge (8-2) senior quarterback Myles Carroll has completed 65.6% of his passes for 1,196 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He has also run for 288 yards and has a team-high eight rushing touchdowns.

If the Pirates are victorious, they’ll play the winner of Weddington and Cuthbertson in the fourth round next Friday.
