Clemson continues to be the biggest surprise in the ACC this season in men’s basketball. The Tigers cruised past Georgia Tech, 72-51, at home on Tuesday (Jan. 24), and they remain in first place in the standings at 9-1 (17-4 overall). With 10 games left, they already have more league wins than last year’s 8-12 team.
Four Clemson players scored in double figures on Tuesday, including fifth-year forward Hunter Tyson, who scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Tyson, a graduate of Piedmont High in Unionville, also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Tyson was limited to 27 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble in the first half.
Junior center PJ Hall had 17 points and seven rebounds for Clemson, guard Brevin Galloway scored 14 and 6-10 freshman forward Chauncey Wiggins contributed 12 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
After being picked to finish 11th out of 15 teams in the ACC by the media in the preseason, the Tigers are on pace to make the NCAA Tournament — a feat they’ve accomplished just twice in the past 12 years (2018 and 2021).
ESPN’s most recent NCAA Tournament projection suggests the ACC will get seven teams invited, and expects Clemson to be a No. 8 seed.
Clemson plays at Florida State on Saturday, and the Seminoles have a 7-14 record. However, FSU has defeated Clemson seven times in a row when playing the Tigers at home.
