WEDDINGTON — In a game with significant conference implications, the Porter Ridge High boys soccer team upset Weddington on the road. The Pirates earned their eighth shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 double-overtime victory against the Warriors on Wednesday.
With the win, Porter Ridge (10-2-2, 2-1-1 SCC) snapped Weddington’s two-game win streak to move to third place in Southern Carolina Conference play.
“(Tonight was) definitely a confidence boost (for us),” Porter Ridge head coach Ron Ladimir said. “(Our guys) wanted to finish the overtime period the way we played in regulation… We capitalized on our chances, and it was a great team effort. I’m really happy for the players.”
It took 90 minutes for either team to get a goal, but sophomore Sebastian Panheco-Torres came in clutch by knocking in two goals for the Pirates in the second overtime period. Goalkeeper Henry Cerom contributed with seven saves in the thriller.
Porter Ridge will host Sun Valley in what it hopes is another victory on Monday. Weddington, which drops to 7-3-2, will travel to Marvin Ridge on Monday.
Cuthbertson 3, Sun Valley 1
After a nail-biting loss to Weddington last Monday, the Cavaliers (6-3-2, 3-1-1 SCC) needed to regain some momentum, and they did it with a 3-1 home win over the Sun Valley Spartans on Wednesday.
Senior Billy Soares scored the first goal for Cuthbertson in the first half. In the second half, Sun Valley was able to control the game. Senior midfielder Cyrus Arneson tied the game with a penalty kick with thirty minutes left. Freshman goalkeeper Ben Sandoval tallied a whopping 14 saves for the Spartans.
The Cavaliers roared right back when Billy and his brother, Jack Soares, scored one goal each to seal the deal. Billy leads the team with six goals. Senior Anthony Brown contributed an assist, and goalkeeper Owen Pavlovsky tallied three saves for Cuthbertson.
Cuthbertson, which is tied with Weddington for first place in the SCC standings, will travel to TC Roberson on Saturday. Sun Valley (10-4-1, 2-2 SCC) will travel to Porter Ridge on Monday.
Marvin Ridge 1, Piedmont 0
The Marvin Ridge High boys soccer team earned its first victory of the season with a 1-0 shutout of Piedmont. The win bumps the Mavericks (1-9-3) to fifth place in the SCC, avoiding remaining in last place in conference play.
Marvin Ridge has scored only ten goals so far, with senior Mark Issa leading the way with three. Junior Stefano Braho scored the only goal of the game against the Panthers.
The Mavericks will host Weddington on Monday. Piedmont (4-7-2) will host Parkwood on Friday.
Union Academy 2, JM Robinson 0
The Union Academy boys shut out J.M. Robinson, 2-0, at home on Wednesday. The Cardinals avenged their first loss to the Bulldogs on Sept. 13th and are currently on a six-game winning streak.
Contributing to the scoring for the Cardinals were senior Liam MacKinnon and Aidan Hopper, who tallied one goal each of the night. Junior Corbin Esquivel racked up two assists while junior Patrick MacKinnon tallied seven saves as the goalkeeper.
