UNIONVILLE — Despite a competitive first quarter, the Weddington High boys basketball team defeated Piedmont, 60-42, on the road Friday night and remained undefeated.

The victory improves the Warriors to 14-0 and 2-0 in Southern Carolina Conference play while dropping the Panthers to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Three Weddington players scored in double digits, including seniors Chase Lowe (19), AJ Cook (17), and Kyle Frazier (10). Frazier and teammate Evan Morton combined for 16 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

The Warriors have won seven of their past eight meetings against Piedmont. The Panthers’ last win over Weddington was a 59-46 road decision on Feb. 8, 2019.

Parkwood 50 West Stanly 49

Head coach Mike Helms’ team overcame their conference loss to Forest Hills with a 50-49 home win against West Stanly.

The Wolfpack jumped ahead 15-4 and held a 23-9 halftime lead. The Colts rallied in the second half, cutting the deficit to 33-29 after three quarters.

Parkwood was sophomore Cameron McKinney had 12 points, six rebounds,and two assists and teammate Sam Starnes contributed seven rebounds.

The win gives the Wolfpack a 6-10 overall record and a 1-1 record in the conference standings. It also snaps a three-game losing streak. Parkwood will travel to Monroe on Friday.

Sun Valley 44, Marvin Ridge 38

The Spartans remain undefeated at home after a 44-38 victory against conference rival Marvin Ridge (4-11, 0-2 SCC) on Friday night. Sun Valley (12-4, 1-1 SCC) has won nine straight home games.

Two Spartans scored in double digits and accounted for most of the offense. Junior forward Daniel Valentine scored 15 points while sophomore Tyree White had 14. The two combined for nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Teammate Cameron Cabble led the team with eight rebounds.

Sun Valley has now won six of its last eight meetings against Marvin Ridge. The Mavericks recent win against the Spartans was a 55-42 home win on Feb. 2, 2018.

Forest Hills 68, Anson 47

Head coach Danny Bailey’s team improved to 6-8 overall with a 68-47 home win against Anson on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets have now won 14 straight meetings against Anson. The Bearcats’ recent win against Forest Hills was a 73-63 home victory on Dec. 16, 2014.

Forest Hills will host Piedmont on Thursday.

Odds and ends

… Union Academy snapped a two-game losing streak with a 54-47 home win against South Stanly in overtime. The Cardinals are now 4-11 and 2-1 in YYC play.

… Monroe defeated Central Academy 72-39 on the road last Friday night. The loss gives the Cougars (1-11, 0-2 RRC) an eight-game losing streak.
