Weddington High’s boys basketball team improved to 13-0 on the season with a 74-50 home win over Freedom on Wednesday. The Warriors, who won the 3A state title with an undefeated record last year, have now won 31 straight games — their last loss was to Freedom in the playoffs in 2020.
Freedom went on to win the 3A state championship in 2020, marking the program’s fourth state title (1994, 1998, 2014).
Senior Chase Lowe scored a team-high 20 points for the Warriors on 8-of-17 shooting from the field on Wednesday, and the 6-foot-5 guard also had nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Lowe has a scholarship offer from Elon University, according to 247Sports, and he also has an offer from Army.
Senior guard AJ Cook had 11 points, five assists and four steals; junior guard Evan Morton had 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists; and senior forward Kyle Frazier contributed eight points, five boards and four assists in the win over Freedom (8-4 overall record).
Of Weddington’s 27 field goals made, 21 of them came off an assist. Eleven of the 12 Warriors who participated scored during the win.
Sun Valley 61, Mt. Pleasant 51
Sun Valley’s boys improved to 11-4 overall with a 61-51 non-conference win on the road Thursday.
Sophomore sensation Tyree White scored 29 points on just 17 shots for the Spartans; the 5-foot-9 guard made 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range and was 6-of-11 on 2-point tries. White also had six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Junior Daniel Valentine, a 6-foot-4 forward, had 14 points and also grabbed six rebounds for the Spartans.

… East Mecklenburg’s boys improved to 9-6 overall with a 70-56 home win over Cuthbertson on Wednesday, dropping the Cavaliers’ record to 9-4.
… Mount Island Charter (5-8 record) defeated Union Academy’s boys 56-54 in Monroe on Wednesday. The Cardinals are now 3-11 on the year.
