MONROE — At the March 2 meeting, the Union County Board of Education appointed Rev. John J. Kirkpatrick, IV to the District 1 seat.

The Union County Democratic Party nominated Kirkpatrick for the position and the Board of Education accepted the recommendation, according to a report from the Union County Public Schools communications department. He will fill the seat left vacant by Candice Sturdivant, who resigned from the Board of Education in February.

With his wife and family by his side, Kirkpatrick was sworn in by Clerk of Superior Court J.R. Rowell.

A native of Union County, Kirkpatrick is the pastor of Rehoboth Church in Monroe. He is also the Union County mentor and community service director for Transforming Youth Movement and the executive director of the Village Development Center.

He has worked for Communities in Schools and was an executive director in Richmond County and a site coordinator in Charlotte. Kirkpatrick has also worked as a teacher assistant at Wingate Elementary, and a substitute and tutor at Walter Bickett Elementary.
