Cuthbertson senior John Newton (16) celebrates with teammates after recording the final out of the Cavaliers’ 5-0 victory over Parkwood on Thursday night. Newton homered in the Cavs’ victory, which gave the program its first-ever outright Southern Carolina Conference title.

The Marvin Ridge baseball team avenged its loss to Sun Valley earlier this week with a 7-2 road win over the Spartans on Thursday night. The Mavericks (10-4) used a six-run fifth inning to pull away from Sun Valley (11-3) and go home victorious in both teams’ regular season finale.

Marvin Ridge’s win gives Cuthbertson the outright Southern Carolina 3A Conference regular season championship.

Sun Valley opened the scoring Thursday in the bottom of the first inning, as seniors Jimmy Kerley and Jack Wooten each drove in one run on successive RBI singles. Marvin Ridge was held scoreless until the third, when sophomore Kyle Dobos hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Mavericks finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch, an error and a walk before junior Sota Asano hit a two-run single with two outs to extend the lead to 7-2, where it would remain for the rest of the night.

Marvin Ridge finished the regular season third in the Southern Carolina Conference standings behind Cuthbertson and Sun Valley, despite winning three of its four games against those teams this season. While only the top-two finishers in each conference are guaranteed playoff spots, it seems probable Marvin Ridge will receive an at-large berth into the postseason.

In 2019, the last full baseball season, Marvin Ridge made it to the 3A state championship series, while Sun Valley missed the tournament after going 7-15 during the regular season.

Cuthbertson 5, Parkwood 0Cuthbertson closed out the regular season with a 5-0 win over Parkwood on Thursday to clinch the Southern Carolina Conference regular season title outright at 12-2 overall.

At the plate, senior Connor Higgins was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. The only other Cavalier to drive in a run was senior John Newton, who went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.

Cuthbertson used three pitchers that combined for the shutout — senior Ethan Wilson, freshman Tristan Potts and Newton. The trio struck out seven batters while walking three.

Winners of six straight games, the Cavaliers will now turn their attention to the 3A state playoffs. During the 2019 season, Cuthbertson lost in the second round of the state tournament to Alexander Central after finishing third in the SCC regular season standings.

Porter Ridge 10, Hickory Ridge 0The Porter Ridge baseball team clinched a share of the Southwestern 4A Conference title Thursday night with a 10-0 victory over third-place Hickory Ridge. The Pirates (12-2, 11-1 SWC) scored eight runs across the first two innings to take care of the Ragin Bulls.

Porter Ridge came out of the gate swinging. Sophomore Ryan Schwartz drove in the game’s first run on a single to left field. After a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly scored two more runs, senior Jacob Ledford extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-run double.

The Pirates scored three more times in the second inning on a two-run single by senior J.H Vaughn and a wild pitch. Despite the offensive explosion, Schwartz was the only Porter Ridge player with more than one hit Thursday. On the mound, Schwartz and senior Matthew Wiedbrauk combined to throw five shutout innings while only giving up three hits.

Now, Porter Ridge will prepare for the 4A state tournament. During the 2019 postseason, the Pirates made it to the second round before falling to South Caldwell.
