MONROE — A 5-year-old child has remained in critical condition for nearly a week after being found in the pool unresponsive at the Monroe Aquatics and Fitness Center Outdoor Water Park on June 9, according to the City of Monroe’s communications department.

City officials have been reviewing what led up to the incident since finding the child in the water last Thursday at approximately 12:45 p.m. “As you can imagine, anytime there is an incident like this we review all policies and protocols,” said Peter Hovanec, Communications and Tourism Officer for the City of Monroe, who responded to an email from The Enquirer-Journal on Monday evening around 7 p.m. “We have discussed the incident with all staff and reinforced the enormous responsibility all lifeguards are charged with while on duty. We continue to evaluate and discuss new ways to ensure public safety and will continue to monitor and see what does, or doesn’t, need to be done differently.”
