MONROE — Piedmont High pulled away from Central Academy in the championship rounds of the Rocky River Conference Tournament to complete their sweep of the regular season and tournament championship at Monroe High on Saturday.

The Panthers took home seven gold medals on the day including a streak of five straight champions from 140 pounds to 171 pounds.

Piedmont heavyweight Mitchell Simpson defeated Will Robinson for the second time this season in the finals and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the season for the RRC.

The Panthers had a 30-point lead over CATA going into the finals and finished with 234 points to the Cougars’ 188.

North Stanly and West Stanly hopped Cuthbertson in the championship rounds to take third and fourth, respectively.

The Cavaliers had one wrestler win his weight class — Devin Johnson defeated Piedmont’s Zeke Grey in the final at 112 pounds, 3-2.

Central Academy’s Daniel Gregorich defeated Kirby Haigler in the finals at 103 pounds to bring home the Cougars’ only first-place medal.

North Stanly was the only team other than Piedmont that one at least two weight classes. The Comets’ Zach Leggett took 135 pounds and Jake Tester won at 215.

Monroe High senior Miles Cook won gold at 189 pounds for his third career conference championship. Cook edged Donovan Price of Berry Academy, 5-4, in triple overtime, in what was possibly the most exciting match of the day.

Price was Cook’s only loss in conference during the season.

The Panthers placed eight wrestlers on the 19-man all-conference team.

Seventeen wrestlers made the all-conference team by virtue of 8-0 records during the conference season or by winning the tournament. With two spots left open, the coaches from the conference voted James Swann of Monroe and Robinson of CATA into the final two spots.

Piedmont’s Todd Stokes was voted coach of the year.

The Panthers have accomplished their first two goals this season: winning the conference and the tournament titles.

Now they set their sights on the the 2A state tournament, which starts Tuesday night.
